The NHSLA handles negligence claims and works to improve risk management practices in the NHS.

We are also responsible for resolving disputes between practitioners and primary care trusts, giving advice to the NHS on human rights case law and handling equal pay claims on behalf of the NHS.

Key facts about our work

In 2007-08, 5,470 claims of clinical negligence and 3,380 claims of non-clinical negligence against NHS bodies were received by the NHSLA. This compares with 5,426 claims of clinical negligence and 3,293 claims of non-clinical negligence in 2006-07.

£633.3 million was paid out in connection with clinical negligence claims in 2007-08.
