The NHS Litigation Authority

We are a not-for-profit part of the NHS. We manage negligence and other claims against the NHS in England on behalf of our member organisations.  

  •  We help to resolve disputes fairly
  •  We share learning about risks and standards in the NHS  
  • We help to improve safety for patients and staff
We are also responsible for advising the NHS on human rights case law and handling equal pay claims.

Sign up to Safety

The NHS Litigation Authority is supporting Sign up to Safety, a new campaign launched by the Secretary of State for Health that aims to listen to patients and staff, learn from when things go wrong and act to make care safer. Sign up to Safety’s three year objective is to reduce avoidable harm by 50% and save 6,000 lives.

As part of our involvement in the Secretary of State for Health’s Sign up to Safety campaign we are offering trusts a potential discretionary incentive payment of up to 10% of their 2015/16 contribution to our Clinical Negligence Scheme for Trust (CNST) if, by 16th January 2015, they produce robust Safety Improvement Plans that show how they will reduce the harm which results in claims.
The deadline for draft plans to Sign up to Safety team submission has now passed but it is still possible to contact for information and support with plans.
